Newspaper in Hanging Basket?
« on: April 02, 2009, 11:01:32 AM »
Hi there,

I was told recently that one could use newspaper to line the basket to help retaining the moisture. Has anybody ever tried that?
How much newspaper would one use?  ???

That sounds interesting Katja

But unfortunatelly I have not got any direct experience with it.

Most probably would be good with a temporary basket like pansies/petunias etc

I would presume it would not be as durable as bark that I use on my baskets for dendrobiums and other orchids.
I use slow release fertiliser and water crystals in my baskets.

Or are you thinking of putting in a sheet of newsper additional to you liner just for holding the water?

I have quite a lot of baskets and a while back replanted them all up with linings of coir that I bought in bags.
They looked stunning - until all the little birds discovered this wonderful source of nesting material - and now there
is very little coir left!  I must re-do my baskets again as the potting mix seems to have shrunk as well and intend cutting shade cloth as the lining with either newspaper or black bin bags(with holes made) lining the inside of the cloth.  The basket I did this way (with shade cloth and newspaper) seems to work well - but I'll see what happens through winter.

Retired - now full-time gardener - and loving it!

Katja,Abby,Rena.
I started using coir , collected from Date Palm trees, lining our streets.
Masses are available between cut off branches on the tree, and it is for free, and unlimmited in quantity.
When birds become a problem, surprise them, by supplying an unlimited quantity of nesting material.
Hope this solves all your problems.
My clivia grow at twice the normal rate, since using baskets.
This was good advice from Dries.

Newspaper actually lasts a long time if you make it 5-6 layers thick. However I think the paper is only supposed to be used to line the coir or other to stop the water rushing through and retain the moisture longer.

Thanks for all the advice. I lined the coir with newspaper hoping that the water will not run out too quickly.

Doug, I definitely got too little in there then. I guess, I need to undo it and use more paper. :)

This is a link to a site with a step by step movie showing how to do a hanging basket.

Of interest is not only do they use newspaper but they also insert a saucer which acts as a reservoir to reduce watering.

Ag no Stef! People here already think I'm mad because I'm always sweeping up the grit off the road on the corners, for my potting mix. Imagine what they're going to say when they spot me climbing the palm trees?? Very good advice!
